Introductory Level Courses ///

Printmaking: Introduction
Students investigate the technical, material, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of printmaking by producing hand-pulled, limited editions through methods of relief, intaglio (etching), monoprint/monotype, lithographic, screenprint, and digital printmaking techniques. Students are introduced to the development of a studio practice by creating a body of work and investigating intentional conceptual strategies alongside technical proficiency. Students develop critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, and discussions.

Printmaking: Screenprinting
Students investigate the technical, material, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of screenprinting through traditional and current methods of additive and reductive printing of hand-cut stencils, drawn stencils, and photomechanical stencils.  Students continue the development of their studio practice by creating a body of work and continuing to investigate conceptual strategies alongside technical proficiencies.  Students continue developing critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, and discussions.

 

Intermediate Courses ///

Printmaking: Etching & Foil Imaging
Students investigate the technical, material, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of intaglio printmaking through traditional and current methods of metal plate etching, aquatint, color inking and printing, collagraph, direct-plate collage methods, and photomechanical processes, and hot-stamped foil. Students continue the development of their studio practice by creating a body of work and continuing to investigate conceptual strategies alongside technical proficiencies.  Students continue developing critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, and discussions.

Printmaking: The Collaborative Print
Students investigate the technical, material, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of lithographic printmaking through traditional and current methods of stone, plate, and photolithographic processes.  Students continue the development of their studio practice by creating a body of work and continuing to investigate conceptual strategies alongside technical proficiencies.  Students continue developing critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, and discussions.

Printmaking: Painterly Prints
Exploration in the technical, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of monoprint and relief printmaking through traditional and current methods of woodcut, linoleum, CNC routing, digital technologies, and other methods to create small editions and unique, singular works on paper. Students continue the development of their studio practice by creating a body of work and continuing to investigate conceptual strategies alongside technical proficiencies.  Students continue developing critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, and discussions.

Printmaking: Digital Inquiries
Students investigate the technical, material, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of both traditional printmaking techniques and contemporary digital media and their application to contemporary visual art and visual culture through various methods.  Students continue the development of their studio practice by creating a body of work and continuing to investigate conceptual strategies alongside technical proficiencies.  Students continue developing critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, and discussions.

Printmaking: Publishing Power
Exploration in the technical, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of book arts and contemporary publishing practices through various book forms, book construction, binding, design, content, letterpress printing, risograph printing, and conceptual considerations. Students continue the development of their studio practice by creating a body of work and continuing to investigate conceptual strategies alongside technical proficiencies.  Students continue developing critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, and discussions.

 

Advanced Courses ///

Printmaking: Archives & Counter-Archives
Advanced individual exploration of institutional and non-normative archives, theories, systems, and practices to create a research-informed body of work. Students develop critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, discussions, and writings.

Printmaking: The Expanded Field in the Expanding Field
Advanced individual and collaborative exploration of artistic production through publication, events, and happenings. Students develop critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, discussions, and writings.

Printmaking: Collaborative Publishing Workshop
Advanced exploration of the inner workings of the professional publishing workshop environment through the production of a fine art print edition designed in collaboration with a visiting artist. Students develop critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, discussions, and writings.

Printmaking: Advanced Studio
Students continue advanced, independent exploration of the technical, material, formal, conceptual, and historical aspects of various printmaking media through traditional and current methods.  Students finalize the development of their studio practice by creating a body of work in preparation for graduation.  Students develop critical judgment and aesthetic awareness through critical reviews, self-evaluations, readings, discussions, and writings.

Special Topics in Printmaking
Advanced individual study of one or more printmaking processes with emphasis on individual technical research, development of personal imagery, and refinement of skills.

 

Graduate Courses ///

Printmaking: Graduate Studio
Intensive studio practice in printmaking combined with reading, writing, and discussion of relevant contemporary issues in the fields of printmaking. Includes regular critiques, both with the group and in individual consultations with the instructor.

Printmaking: Independent Study
Individual research in printmaking which includes regular critiques with the instructor.
